Purist Boutique

- IT: Ormai é evidente, siamo malati di sneakers e ne andiamo fieri. Però, dato che non ci accontentiamo semplicemente di parlarne, abbiamo deciso di incontrare e conoscere chi come noi ama calzare esclusivo. Abbiamo colto l’occasione di intervistare il titolare di uno tra i più famosi sneakers shop della California: PURIST Boutique.

Il proprietario, Kevin Lee, è un “ragazzo” di 35 anni con una passione e una devozione unica per le sneakers. Con il supporto della moglie ha costruito il negozio affidandosi interamente alla propria passione, conferendogli un “sapore” unico e inimitabile.

La boutique si estende interamente su un piano e si presenta con un aspetto molto minimale: i Toys e una pregiatissima selezione di brands made in Japan, fanno da contorno ad una ormai affermata realtà. Di seguito potete leggere qualche domanda che abbiamo rivolto a Kevin.

- EN: Until now we have only been talking about Street-wear and sneakers. But not being fully satisfied with the descriptions of a sneakers we took the opportunity to interview the owner of one of the best sneakers shops of Cali, PURIST Boutique.

The owner, Kevin Lee is a 35 years old guy with a passion and a unique devotion for sneakers.

Kevin, with his wife’s support, built the store following his passions and giving it a unique flavor.

The boutique is all extended on a single floor and has a very minimal aspect: the Toys and a prized selections of made in Japan brands are the only items that you can find inside this well-established reality. Here's the interview with Kevin.

- IT: Il nome del tuo negozio è PURIST: da dove deriva la scelta di questo nome?

Ho visto questa parola su un giornale e ho pensato che fosse perfetta! Io mi considero un purista, ovvero una persona che é contro a tutto ciò che contamina un oggetto, un'idea, una qualsiasi cosa nel suo significato più semplice. Per esempio: quando si parla di sneakers, io preferisco SEMPRE i colori originali (OG) con il quale la scarpa è nata. Se una sneaker esce in un nuovo colore, preferisco sempre quando i suoi colori ricordano il blocco di colori originale.

- EN: Where does the name come from?

It was something that I had read in a magazine and that word was perfect. I consider myself a purist, I always prefer the true meaning of what something is. For example, when it comes to shoes I ALWAYS prefer the original colors. If something does come in a new color I always like it when the colors relate to the original color blocking.

- IT: Perchè hai preso la decisione di aprire uno sneakers shop?

Ho sempre amato le scarpe fin da quando avevo 8 anni. I miei genitori nel 1984 mi comprarono

un paio di Air Jordan I e da quel giorno non ho più smesso di comprarne. La cosa divertente è che a 8 anni non avevo la minima idea di chi fosse Michael Jordan ma semplicemente mi piaceva il colore delle sue scarpe. Con il passare degli anni, l’ossessione crebbe e ricordo che nel 1994, all’età di 18 anni,comprai due paia di Air Jordan III RETRO e la gente pensò che fossi matto.

Più avanti nel 2006 io e mia moglie decidemmo di aprire il nostro negozio, il quale originariamente doveva essere solamente una sneakers boutique, ma alla fine optammo per la vendita sia di sneakers che di vestiti.

- EN: Why did you decide to open the sneakers shop?

I have been in love with shoes ever since I was 8 years old. My parents bought me a pair of the Air Jordan I and I’ve been hooked ever since. The funny thing is at age 8 I didn’t even know who MJ was yet, I just loved the colors. Over the years the obsession grew and I remember in 1994 I bought 2 pairs of the Air Jordan III RETRO and people thought I was crazy. Fast forward to 2006 my wife and I wanted to start our own business, which was originally a shoe boutique, but we changed the idea to shoes and clothes.

- IT: Da quanto tempo è aperto il negozio?

Quattro anni e mezzo.

- EN: How long has it been open?

4.5 years.

- IT: Che tipo di negozio pensi che sia Purist? A che categoria pensi appartenga?

I tempi stanno cambiando e per rimanere in affari devi continuare a cambiare

anche tu. Quando abbiamo aperto, la nostra tendenza si spingeva più verso lo street-wear e chiaramente verso le sneakers. Ora ci stiamo pian pian allontanando da questa tendenza perchè il mercato è ormai in sovrasaturazione di sneakers. Non puoi battere la concorrenza di negozi come Footlocker, 21 Mercer, House Of Hoops e nemmeno dei Nike Outlets. La gente ora come ora, indossa Vans e non si interessa delle classiche Air Force 1, delle Air Trainers e neppure delle Air Max da running. Così siamo arrivati alla conclusione di vendere più abbigliamento e meno scarpe. Nike è l’unico marchio sportivo che vendiamo. Ora teniamo più Red Wings e Tricker's.

- EN: Which kind of shop do you think purist is?

Times are changing and to stay in business you have to keep changing as well. When we started we were more Street-wear and sneakers. Now we are straying away from the sneakers because of the oversaturation of the market. You can’t beat Footlocker, 21 Mercer, House Of Hoops, or even Nike Outlets. People wear Vans now, they don’t care as much about the classics like Air Force 1, Air Trainers, Tech Basketball shoes, or even Air Max running shoes. So these days we have been steering towards more clothing and less shoes. Nike is the only athletic company we carry. We now stock more Red Wings and Tricker's.

- IT: Quali marchi possiamo trovare all’ interno del negozio?

- EN: Which brands do you sell?

Comme des Garçon PLAY, Bedwin and the Heartbreakers, OriginalFake, Acronym, NexusVII®, UNDFTD, Futura Laboratories, Fred Perry, NSW Pinnacle, Nike, Red Wings, Tricker’s, Medicom.

- IT: Ho avuto modo di vedere il tuo negozio di persona e ho notato che è ricco di brands giapponesi… Da dove deriva questa tua scelta?

Tendo ad avere più brands giapponesi perchè penso che riflettano la qualità e lo stile della loro cultura. In termini di qualità, la loro attenzione ai dettagli è fantastica; parlando di stile, Tokyo è veramente avanti nel campo della moda, con gente che prova continuamente nuovi e differenti stili.

- EN: I noticed that you prefere japanse brands… Where does this choice come from?

I do tend to have more Japanese brands and I think that reflects the quality and style of the culture in general. In terms of quality their attention to detail is amazing. When you talk about style Tokyo is very fashion forward, with people trying new and different styles all the time.

- IT: Devo ammettere che le scarpe in vendita dentro il tuo negozio sono molto particolari e molto rare. Come scegli quale sneakers è più giusta per il tuo negozio? Svelaci il tuo segreto!

Oggi scegliamo con molta attenzione le nostre scarpe. Generalmente scegliamo il colore originale della prima edizione di ogni scarpa (Retro Releases). Ma, oltre alle “OG releases”, proponiamo al cliente sneakers in edizione limitata (Quickstrike) possibilmente abbinabili con i vestiti che teniamo in negozio.

- EN: How do you decide which sneakers buy for your shop? How do you choose one pair instead of another?

These days the shoes we select are done very carefully. We usually pick the true original colors of retro releases. Aside from OG releases we choose Quickstrike offerings that match the kind of clothes we carry.

- IT: Quante paia di sneakers possiedi?

Possiedo circa 350/400 paia di sneakers.

- EN: How many pair of sneakers do you have?

About 350-400.

- IT: Hai qualcos’altro da aggiungere?
