Tre superstar della scena Hip-Hop mondiale quali Common, LL Cool J e Lupe Fiasco hanno dato quel tocco in più al concerto per le nomination dei Grammy, cantando, mercoledì notte (30 novembre), "The Message" in tributo a Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Il singolo rilasciato nel 1982 è stato introdotto nella Grammy Hall Of Fame del 2011; si sono aggiunti a loro anche Melle Mel e Scorpio, ideatori della canzone originale, mentre al giradischi il leggendario DJ Grandmaster Flash. Common ha dato il via alla performance cantando i primi versi della canzone: "Broken glass everywhere / People pissin’ on the stairs, you know they just don’t care / I can’t take the smell, can’t take the noise / Got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice". Melle Mel e Scorpio si sono esibiti subito dopo Common con la seconda strofa. In seguito il rapper Lupe Fiasco ha recitato gli storici versi di Duke Bootee: "The bill collectors, they ring my phone / And scare my wife when I’m not home / Got a bum education, double-digit inflation / Can’t take the train to the job, there’s a strike at the station". Per chiudere in bellezza, LL Cool J ha cantato i versi provocatori di Melle Mel: "A child is born with no state of mind / Blind to the ways of mankind / God is smilin’ on you but he’s frownin’ too / Because only God knows what you’ll go through" cercando di coinvolgere il pubblico. Il rapper di Miami Rick Ross non ha stranamente partecipato al tribute di "The Message". Sarebbe stato bello sentirlo pronunciare il suo grugnito (R-Ruh!) accompagnato dal celeberrimo grugnito di Melle Mel. Anche se "The Message" ha 30 anni, il testo di questa canzone deve essere considerato attuale nel 2011. Common, Uncle L e Lupe hanno fatto un lavoro fenomenale nel portare la vecchia scuola nella nuova con un messaggio importante alle spalle.
